Gov. Peter Shumlin holds a license plate during his State of the State address Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012 in Montpelier.

(Host) The Vermont Senate has put the passage of "Vermont Strong" commemorative license plates on a fast track and the bill is expected to receive final passage by the end of the week.

The license plates will cost $25, and the bulk of the proceeds will go to the Vermont Long-Term Disaster Relief Fund for people who've been affected by Tropical Storm Irene.

Senate Transportation chairman Dick Mazza says the plates are a good way for all Vermonters to support Irene recovery efforts:

(Mazza) "We're going to sell them all over the place. We've contracted I believe with the Vermont Grocers Association so the grocery stores will have them for sale for $25 because it has very little to do with Motor Vehicles other than administration. So the idea is to sell as many as you can to raise as much money as you can for the victims."

(Host) But some law enforcement officers are concerned because the plates - which are designed to go on the front of vehicles - will have a special design instead of a specific license plate number.

Mazza doesn't share law enforcement's concerns:

(Mazza) "That's an issue that's been around for many years - sure it is an added feature for them for an oncoming car to see what the number is but many, many states don't have a front plate and I think one of these days Vermont will do away with the front plate to save money."

(Host) Backers of the legislation are hoping to raise a million dollars through the sale of the plates.
