DIY Thunderbolt Heavy Fighter pt 7 | medwayscott

Well it’s been a while, Christmas got I the way a little bit… But only a little bit. What I was waiting for (namely a pair of engines from an Imperial Guard Valkyrie) turned up in the post today whilst I was at work.

I wanted to have them to check the size of the engine cowls rather than making them and keeping my fingers crossed that everything fitted together afterwards. The first thing I did was completely assemble the engine then saw the exhaust off. This was then built up on one side so it would be spaced into the centre of the cowl and attached to the back plate of the engine unit and the side wall of the fuselage (which will hopefully hold the whole thing together tighter).

Then I got the front plate in place and trimmed the Valkyrie intake a little so it would fit and got all of that in place. The next thing to do (and the last thing as this while process took about two hours) was fill in the side of the cowling and work out how I was going to get the wing fitted. I’ve opted to run it through under the side plate and glue it to the front and back plates as well as the bottom of the side plate… If that makes sense?

So that’s one side finished and the other started. As I said in the last post, keeping things symmetrical is going to be the challenge now, particularly the angle of the wings.

I’ll probably attempt to get everything stuck together tomorrow evening, but progress might slow down for a little bit again after that as I’ll be at the London Boat Show on and off until the 15th of January for work. And I’m sure I’ll take a lot of photos of the stuff I’ll never have any chance of being able to afford…
