I'm trying to figure out the best method for modeling a
beam joining plate, where bolts pass through three
separate components (a front plate, the beam, and a back
plate). I'm currently working with a very simple model to
develop a method that will best model the real case.
Below is a picture of my test model with the loading
conditions.

The two outer plates are constrained and the third middle
plate has a load that will pull the plate from between
the other two. In the real world, four bolts will prevent
this from happening, but the question is: what is the
best way to model this in Mechanica?

Currently I have two methods that comes to mind:

First Method:

The first method uses two beams with a cylindrical
cross-section to simulate the bolt. The two outer plates
have a datum point on axis with the bolt hole and laying
on the plane for the outer surface. These datum points
have ridged links connecting them to the outer surface.
The third datum point is on axis of the third plate in
the middle and the point is midway between the two outer
surfaces. This datum point has a ridged link connecting
it to the hole's surface area. Below is an image.

Second Method:

The second method uses two fasteners to join the plates
together. The diagram below shows the connection layout.

The first bolt joins the front plate and the middle plate
and the second bolt joins the middle plate and the back
plate.

The second method is much, much quicker to implement, and
my gut feeling is that it might be modeling the joining
of the plates in a more realistic way. In reality, the
middle plate will not come into contact with the bolt
unless the load overcomes the friction between the plates
and causes the middle plate to slide. Before this
happens, the shear load is being distributed across the
contact surfaces and the load that the friction will be
able to handle will be dependent on the pre-load
(compression force) and the coefficient of friction.

It should be noted that the final model will be using
midsurfaces since the material thickness is on the lower
end.

Thoughts?

Few e63 items for sale: SmartTOP : Black Kidney Grills : Floormats ...

Few e63 items for sale: SmartTOP : Black Kidney Grills : Floormats : Front Plate Mount

My lease expired last month and I'm selling a few items off the car.
Located in NNJ. Local pickup preferred so you can inspect. Paypal is no problem. Prices are including shipping.
Thanks

EDIT: SmartTOP and Grills SOLD.

SmartTOP Comfort Roof Control:
Part number STLFBW1.
Probably the greatest single mod I've ever done to a car. The one touch open/close which lets you park, shut off the car, lock it with the remote and walk away made it worth the price of the unit alone. One touch while driving, especially while shifting always came in handy as well.
This unit was modified by Stephen Wilhemy when he used to live in NJ to include one touch operation for the rear window by itself.
Includes all parts necessary to install including printed/color instructions. Stephen is also super easy to get in touch with and he told me whoever bought the unit could call him if necessary and he could help walk them through the installation, which itself takes only about 20 min.
Additionally, if you want to make install even easier you can buy the new plug and play adaptor to upgrade the unit further.
As you'll see in pics, wires were cut on removal and wire nutted with replacement BMW parts to make ready for re-install. We're just talking about copper wire here. This will not affect anything on the product.
These units are selling new for $379
Asking: SOLD

Matte Black Kidney Grills:
Solid black ABS plastic so they will not chip or flake. These have been on the car for 30k miles so they are not perfect...call it a little road rash.
I would rate them aesthetically an 8 out of 10. If your car has more than 10k miles I would put these on without worrying about them looking any older then the car.
One side has a missing clip on the top. The top section has four clips and this is one of the center clips. I would say that they can be installed without the clip and they should hold on tightly. They were a bit of a b1tch to get out.
These units are selling new for $120
Asking: SOLD

OEM BMW Floormats:
New, never used. Still in bag and include floor mounted toggles.
Asking: $75 obo

OEM BMW License Plate Mount/base:
New, never used (never mounted from plate). Factory paint in Sapphire Black. Sorry a little dirty.
Asking: $25 obo

Well my 08 has a black plastic strip with two screw hole in it, and it looks like they were just drilled holes. I would not put anything on my front bumper, I mean if you do it will have to be read sdrawkcab(backwards).

DefaultFront Plate Mount.

I ordered the wrong front plate mount from pelican http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...%20318ti%09%20

I forgot the the M-Tech Bumper would be different.
This looks to be the right part. Can anyone confirm? http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...C%20Each%20%20

It looks like the standard molding piece but with two holes in it to access the threaded screw holes underneath. Is this correct? If so can I just drill out the part I have? Then if I ever end up back in a state w/o front plates I can just order the a new standard molding without holes.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

this is what you need, those two holes aren't spaced correctly for a plate, they're just for the bracket. you could always just put a couple self tapping screws in to the molding, it's how I have my euro plate on
