Indy Tax Dollars: Way off topic

As we have observed the recent hullabaloo in the local media about automobile license plates, we have decided to offer a solution.  It is an idea which came to us years ago and has nothing to do with being green, religious belief, sexual orientation, gas mileage or even the color of one’s eyes!

We start with the concept that the multiplicity of "official" state license plates surely must add unnecessary difficulty for traffic officers trying to identify a car in sometimes very difficult circumstances.

The suggestion is this.  Return to the policy of one single, official, readily identifiable plate issued by the State of Indiana, to be placed on the rear of the vehicle.

Allow any individual, organization or company to go into the business of making and selling so-called "vanity" plates to be used only on the front of the vehicle.  (Regulated by the state only as to size and location on the vehicle?)

This would allow a fraternal lodge, a church, a university, the PTA, a sports team - any organization or even an individual - to use this as a means for fund-raising, advertising, bragging or whatever.  Just think.  Thousands of vehicles could carry a front plate as identifying the owner as 1-A, or Top Dog or whatever.  Which would seem to us to be eminently fair to all while actually being helpful to law enforcement.

And this approach would certainly take the state off the hook of being accused of support for, opposition to or discrimination against any particular individual or organization, whether public or private.  Make sense?  Too easy??
